PRINCETON, N.Y. – First-year
Riley Walsh scored with just 4:44 remaining in the third period to tie the game before the Union College women's hockey team fell 3-2 in overtime to the Tigers of Princeton University on Friday afternoon from Hobey Baker Memorial Rink. With her two goals, Walsh became the first Union rookie to score 15 goals in the Division I era.
Walsh found the back of the net twice to push her season goal total to 15 goals, making her the second Union rookie ever to score 15 in a season, joining Elizabeth Flanagan '05 in 2001-02. Walsh previously broke the previous Division I rookie record of 12 set by Elise Nichols '07 in 2003-04.
Sophomore
Maren Friday grabbed two assists to push her assist total to double digits (10). Classmates
Maya Jones and first-year
Stephanie Bourque each earned assists as well. Sophomore net minder
Sophie Matsoukas stopped 46 shots in the effort.
Union opened the scoring just six and half minutes into the opening frame with a power-play goal. Senior
Emily King carried the puck into the offensive zone. She then sent a pass back to the blue line, where Bourque was waiting for the puck. Bourque went point to point to Friday who let a shot go from the point. Friday's shot was saved, but Walsh was there for the rebound and buried the puck into the open goal.
Union was out shot 19-4 in the first period, but remained with a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. Neither team found the back of the net in the second period and the score remained 1-0.
The Tigers scored two goals in a 1:39 span early in the third period to grab a 2-1 lead, with both goals coming on the power-play.
Union responded with 4:44 to go in the game as Walsh buried her second power-play goal of the evening from the exact same spot to tie the game 2-2. Friday and Jones earned the assists on the game tying goal.
Neither team was able to score in the final four minutes of action and the game went to overtime. In overtime, both teams traded chances, including Matsoukas stopping a breakaway to keep the game level. King was whistled for a penalty in the extra frame and Princeton scored on the ensuing possession after the shot snuck through Matsoukas' pads after she went post to post to make the initial save.
The garnet and white went 2-5 on the power-play but the penalty kill struggled, giving up three goals while short handed.
Union (11-19-1, 4-14-1) will look to get back in the win column as they take on #6 Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon from M&T Bank Arena. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m.
