HAMDEN, CONN. – The Union College women's hockey kept the game tied 1-1 for the first two periods before the #6 Quinnipiac Bobcats exploded for four goals in the third period and cruised to a 5-1 win over Union opn Saturday afternoon from M&T Bank Arena. Junior
Celeste Beaudoin scored Union's lone goal of the afternoon.
Beaudoin scored her fifth goal of the season in the first period. First-year
Riley Walsh earned the lone assist on the goal. Sophomore
Sophie Matsoukas stopped 53 shots in the loss.
The Bobcats opened the scoring just over half way through the first period.
Union answered back rather quickly just over three minutes later. Union worked the puck out of the zone and then on a deflection the puck found Walsh's stick. Walsh skated the puck to center ice before handing off to Beaudoin. Beaudoin skated in on a 2 on1 and beat the Quinnipiac net minder over her glove to even the score at 1-1.
The Bobcats carried play for majority of the second period, out shooting Union 33-8 through the first 40 minutes. Neither team scored in the second frame.
In the third period, Quinnipiac exploded for four goals in the 20-minute span to win by a final of 5-1.
Union went 0-1 on their lone power-play chance but went 1-1 on the penalty kill. Matsoukas stopped 50 or more shots for the second time this season.
Union (11-20-1, 4-15-1) will wrap up the regular on February 17-18 with games against Colgate and Cornell. Union will face off against Colgate on Friday, February 17 from Messa Rink. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m.
