ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Senior
Chris Lovisolo hit the game-winning layup with one second left in overtime to cap a late-game comeback and give the Union College men's basketball team a hard-fought 76-75 (OT) victory over Bard College in a Liberty League matchup on Saturday afternoon at Stevenson Athletic Center.
Union (4-17, 3-11 Liberty League) led for only nine seconds of overtime on Saturday, but managed to be ahead at the exact right moments. The visitors trailed by three with 18 seconds remaining in extra time before junior
Luke McGarrity drove to the hoop for an acrobatic layup that cut the deficit to one with 9.9 seconds on the clock. Union then forced a turnover on the subsequent inbounds play and McGarrity dove to the ground to retrieve the loose ball with 3.5 seconds left and give Union a chance for the win.
After a timeout, McGarrity inbounded the ball under the hoop to Lovisolo, who laid it up and in with 1.2 seconds remaining to give Union the lead and the victory.
Lovisolo had a huge game for Union, finishing with 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. McGarrity played sparingly during regulation but made his presence felt in overtime, scoring all seven of his points in extra time and adding three assists. Lost in the action of overtime was another big effort by junior
Edward Baptiste, who led all players in scoring with a career-high 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting and added nine rebounds.
Seniors
Sean Regis (11 points) and
Brian Noone (10 points) both stepped up as well in key situations for the visitors.
Bard (6-15, 3-11 Liberty League) had the largest lead of the game at 62-52 with 6:56 left in the second half, but Union managed to hold the Raptors off the scoreboard for the remainder of regulation on the way to a comeback. Bard missed their final 11 shots of the second half and Union was able to capitalize, tying the score at 62 on a pair of Regis free throws with 1:57 remaining. Both teams had several chances to win the game down the stretch, but some excellent transition defense by the Garnet kept Bard off the board and sent the game to overtime.
The Raptors led by as many as five (68-63) in overtime, but Lovisolo (six) and McGarrity (seven) combined to score Union's last 13 points as the visitors mounted a late-game comeback and came away with the victory.
Union led by as many as nine points in the first half after starting the game on a 12-3 run. The visitors led for a majority of the opening 20 minutes, but went into halftime with the score tied at 35. Union held its last lead of regulation after a Baptiste jumper made the score 45-43 with 11:50 remaining, but the Raptors went on an extended 19-7 run to take a 10-point lead before going cold for the rest of regulation.
Union finished the game shooting 41.7 percent (30 of 72) from the field, while Bard ended the afternoon at 36.8 percent (28 of 76).
Union will take its final road trip of the season next weekend, beginning with a Friday night matchup at Hobart College set for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff in Geneva.
