Men's Tennis Starts Spring Break with 7-2 Victory

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Union College men's tennis team got its Spring Break trip off to a good start on Sunday morning, defeating Millikin University by a 7-2 score at the Van der Meer Tennis Center.

Senior Aidan O'Brien and sophomores Ben Jacobs and Ian Schunk were all double winners for Union (2-4) on the day, as the team swept all three doubles matches and then took four of the six singles contests to emerge with the victory.

Jacobs and junior Dimitris Binopoulos got the day off to a good start for Union at first doubles, posting an 8-4 victory over Martin Cardestig and Hasting Bjorkman. O'Brien earned his first win of the day soon after, teaming with sophomore Seth Prusko for an 8-5 second-doubles win over Clayton Maack and Theodor Wolf. Schunk and junior Bailey McAtee then made it a clean sweep, outlasting Cole Phillips and Rodrigo Laux at the third flight, 8-7 (7-5).

After Millikin (5-2) got its first point of the day at third singles, O'Brien completed his Sunday sweep with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Wolf at fourth singles to move Union within a point of victory. The team did not have to wait long to secure the decisive fifth point, with Jacobs following up soon after by completing his 6-4, 6-1 win over Cardestig at second singles.

Schunk and senior Thomas McGuire completed the day with two more victories. Schunk earned his second win of the day at fifth singles, using a second-set tiebreaker to defeat Phillips for the second time, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). McGuire finished off the win with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Laux at sixth singles.

Union will continue its Spring Break schedule tomorrow morning with a matchup against the College of Wooster.
