AUBURNDALE, Fla. – In a record-setting day, the Union College baseball team picked up two wins on Monday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park to improve to 3-1 on the season. Union opened the day with a 14-3 win over SUNY Old Westbury before downing Wisconsin-Eau Claire 9-4 later in the day.

Union also came close to tying the NCAA DIII record for sacrifice flies in a game with four against Wisconsin Eau-Claire. The current record is five.
Game One: Union 14, SUNY Old Westbury 3
The Union offense erupted in the seven-inning game with six of Union's starters recording a hit. Senior
Jono Santos registered the only multi-hit outing, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore
Dan Sheeran went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored. First-year
Cooper Ames recorded his first career triple and scored a pair of runs while junior
Kobe Mentzer went 1-for-1 with two RBIs and plated two.
On the base path, Union registered 13 stolen bases. The last time Union stole double-digit bases was on April 11, 2018, a 7-4 win at Elms.
Union opened the scoring in the bottom of the opening frame. After Ames launched a triple deep into center field, Mentzer sent a sac fly to center to bring Ames home. The Panthers responded in the top of the second with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. The garnet and white tacked on two in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead. Anthony Ruzzo stole second, prompting a throw to second, and Psirogianes stole home.
SUNY Old Westbury tied the game again in the top of the third with a leadoff homerun. The Union bats broke the game open in the third with eight runs in the bottom of the frame. With runners on first and second, Santos and Mentzer stole second and third, respectively, before the latter capitalized on a throwing error to give Union a 4-3 lead. Santos doubled later in the frame, bringing home the final two runs of the inning.
The garnet and white added two more runs in the fourth inning before plating the final run of the game in the fifth of a sac fly by junior
Sebastian Pike.
First-year
Alex Oppenheimer impressed in his collegiate debut, fanning 10 batters through 4.1 innings of work. The Westport, Conn. native surrendered three runs on four hits and six walks. Junior
Bryce Fournier pitched 0.2 inning, striking out one, while senior
Harry Azadian also pitched a scoreless inning and stuck out one. Junior
Deven Smith pitched the final inning, striking out three while giving up two hits.
Game Two: Union 9, Wisconsin-Eau Claire 4

Thomas Parisi went 2-for-3 with two runs scored while first-year
Caleb Miller went 2-for-2 with a run scored. Senior
Jack Davis also registered a pair of hits with an RBI and a run. Mentzer continued his strong day at the plate with four RBIs.
Union jumped out to a four-run lead in the first inning and didn't look back. Parisi hit a leadoff double followed by a walk by Miller. A single by Mentzer brought Parisi home. Back-to-back walks later brought in Union's second run. A groundout by Ruzzo brought in Union's third run and a sac fly by senior
Jack Milone scored Union's fourth run. The Blugolds scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the frame to cut Union's lead to two.
The garnet and white added a fifth run in the second inning. Back-to-back singles by Parisi and Miller put runners on first and third. Mentzer reached on a fielder's choice to bring Parisi home.
Union extended the lead to five. Ruzzo drew a leadoff walk and a single by Milone followed by an error by the left fielder gave Union a four-run lead. A sac fly by Davis later in the frame brought Milone across the plate for Union's seventh run.
The Blugolds tallied their third run in the fourth on an inside the park homerun by Nate Witte. Union added another run in the sixth inning, off a sac fly by Mentzer. Wisconsin-Eau Claire added one more run in the bottom of the sixth.
Union scored the final run on another sac fly by Mentzer. With bases loaded, Mentzer hit his second sac fly of the game.
Senior
Ben Mlavsky pitched six complete innings, allowing four runs, two earned, on seven hits, while striking out four. First-year
Jack Klein pitched three scoreless innings in relief, surrendering two hits, and striking out three.
Union is back in action on Wednesday with a doubleheader against St. Lawrence. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Northeast Regional Park.
