HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Union College women's tennis team picked up its third victory in as many days to continue their hot start to Spring Break, defeating Oberlin College by a 6-3 score in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon at Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Club.
The two teams actually split a pair of doubles contests and each squad took two singles matches, but Union (4-3) earned the victory because Oberlin (5-5) did not have enough players to contest matches at third doubles, fifth singles or sixth singles.
After the Yeowomen earned the first point of the day at second doubles, Union came back to even the score with a first-doubles victory. Senior
Marilena Karadimou and junior
Gracie Nicol picked up the point for Union with an 8-5 win over Marta Laska and Anna Pastore.
Nicol and first-year
Chara Meidani clinched the victory for Union with a pair of singles wins. Nicol earned the team's first singles point by sweeping Pastore with a pair of 6-2 sets at second singles. Meidani and Dina Nouaime split a pair of 6-1 sets to send their match into a supertiebreaker, where Meidani saved a match point at 9-10 and won the next two points to emerge with a 12-10 victory.
Sophomore
Gabby Gatto also fought hard in her fourth-singles match with Lydia Zafeiri, coming up a break short in both sets of a 7-5, 7-5 defeat.
Union will look to complete a perfect 4-0 week in Hilton Head tomorrow, when the team battles Carleton College beginning at 9 a.m.
