Union Closes Out Trip with Win Over Williams

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – The Union College baseball team (5-5) defeated Williams College (4-3) 10-4 in game one of a planned doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Atrium Health Ballpark. Game two was postponed due to weather and is expected to be made up later in the season.

The win over the Ephs is the first for Union since April 12, 2016. Union came away with a 7-6 win in 11 innings in Amsterdam.

Seven of Union's starters registered a hit. Senior Jono Santos went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and his first home run of the season while junior Thomas Parisi went 2-for-3 on the afternoon.

Union opened the scoring in the second inning with four runs. With bases loaded, Parisi drove a RBI single into left field. One batter later, junior Anthony Ruzzo reached on a fielder's choice and a throwing error by the Ephs third baseman saw two more runs cross home. Sophomore Dan Sheeran singled through the left side to bring Parisi home for the final run of the inning.

The Ephs struck back in the top of the third. After Dave Mosrie singled, Jakob Cohn drove a homerun over the left field fence to make it a two-run game.

Leading off in the bottom of the third, Santos responded with a homerun of his own to make it a 5-2 game.

Williams wasn't finished and added back-to-back homeruns in the fifth inning with Cohn hitting his second of the day followed by Henry Juan. Union answered back with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. After back-to-back singles and stolen bases by first-year JT Psirogian and Parisi, respectively, Davis hit a two-run double into left field. A wild pitch put Davis on third in time for an RBI single by first-year Cooper Ames. In the next at-bat junior Kobe Mentzer drove a triple into deep center field and Ames raced home. Union scored the final run of the inning on a fielding error, which gave Mentzer enough time to cross home plate.

Sophomore Chris Suter made his second start of the season and moved to 2-0. The sophomore struck out a career-high seven batters and allowed four runs on eight hits with two walks. First-year Alex Oppenheimer entered the game in the ninth inning and struck out two batters.

Union is back in action on Tuesday at Utica University with a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
