HARTFORD, Conn. – The Union College men's tennis team dropped a hard-fought 6-3 match to Trinity (Conn.) College in a non-conference matchup on Sunday afternoon at the Assaiante Tennis Center.
Union (1-4) picked up three singles victories and was a break short of extending three other matches as well, as the visitors hung in well against the strong NESCAC squad.
Trinity (1-1) got off to a good start in doubles play, sweeping all three points to take an early lead. Junior
Bailey McAtee and sophomore
Ian Schunk nearly pulled out a point for the visitors at third doubles, but came one break short in a 8-6 loss to Rico Buoro and Brandon Felcher.
Union attempted to mount a comeback in singles play, but came up a few games short. Sophomore
Ben Jacobs earned the team's first point at second singles, bouncing back from a 7-5 first-set tiebreaker to best Eduardo Sanchez-Carrion in the final two sets, 6-3 and 6-4. Junior
Khai Ton came close to continuing the momentum at third singles, but ended up a break away in the first set and a few points away in a second-set tiebreaker in a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) loss.
Schunk and senior
Thomas McGuire came away with supertiebreaker victories as fifth and sixth singles, respectively, as well. Schunk fought back from a tough first set to cruise past Pierce Rutledge, 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-3), while McGuire also came back from a set down to defeat Kartik Erodula, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8).
Senior
Aidan O'Brien also fought hard at fourth singles and needed just two more breaks to go his way, dropping a 6-4, 7-5 match to Felcher.
After taking some time off for finals, Union will head south to Hilton Head, S.C., for its annual Spring Break Trip, with three matches beginning on March 19 against Millikin University.
