SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team moved to 2-1 in Liberty League play with a convincing 8-1 win over Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon at Sportime Tennis Club.
Four players earned a pair of victories on the day for Union (4-5, 2-1 Liberty League), as senior
Aidan O'Brien, junior
Dimitris Binopoulos, and sophomores
Ben Jacobs and
Ian Schunk all won on both the singles and doubles courts. In all, seven players had at least one victory to their credit on the afternoon.
Union started the day with three doubles victories, as the home team had to battle through three challenging matches to take an early lead. O'Brien and sophomore
Seth Prusko earned the first point of the day by defeating Nicolas Luis Vega and Tyler Del Zoppo, 8-6. Schunk and sophomore
Austin Gregory posted an 8-5 win over Eric Dubilirer and Jacob Wachs to finish off the doubles sweep.
The best doubles match of the day came from Binopoulos and Jacobs at the first flight, with the pair staving off four match points before emerging with a win. The pair held serve at 5-7 to stay alive, but faced a 0-40 deficit in the next game before winning four straight points to even the match and eventually pull out a 7-3 win in the tiebreaker.
Union kept things rolling in singles play, taking the first set in all six matches and cruising to victory in the top-five flights. Schunk lost only two games in a 6-0, 6-2 fifth-singles win over Jimin Woo, and Binopoulos clinched the victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Dubilirer at second singles. Jacobs improved to 2-1 at the top flight by defeating Luis Vega with a pair of 6-4 sets, and O'Brien added another insurance point with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Wachs at the fourth flight.
Junior
Khai Ton wrapped up the day with a hard-fought supertiebreaker win over Siddharth Vaada in their fourth-singles matchup, winning the first set by a 6-2 margin and taking the breaker, 11-9.
Union will finish up a busy weekend of action tomorrow with a 2 p.m. matchup against Hobart College at Sportime Tennis Club.
