AMSTERDAM, N.Y – Sophomore
Dan Sheeran had a big day at the plate to help guide the Union College baseball team (10-10, 2-4 Liberty League) to a 9-6 win over SUNY Oneonta (19-6, 5-1 SUNYAC) Tuesday night at Shuttleworth Park.
Sheeran was a triple short of the cycle as the infielder went 4-for-5 with a three-run homerun, a double, and three runs scored. Junior
Kobe Mentzer chipped in with a 3-for-4 night, a pair of RBIs, and a run scored.
After two scoreless innings, Union found the scoreboard in the third inning. Singles by Sheeran and Mentzer put runners on the corners and first-year
Caleb Miller lined an RBI single to right center to bring home the first run of the game.
The Union bats broke the game open in the fourth. Sophomore
Sam Strazza led off with a double into centerfield and senior
Jack Milone followed up with a single into right. Junior
Sebastian Pike drove a single into center for Union's first run of the inning. Two batters later, Sheeran hit a three-run homerun over the fence to give Union a 5-0 lead.
The visitors began mounting a comeback in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring three runs to make it a 5-3 game.
Union tacked on three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-3 lead. Back-to-back singles saw the sixth run come in. After another single by Miller to put two runners on, senior
Dan Choate entered the game as a pinch hitter and drove in both runners on a single up the middle.
The visitors drove in three runs in the top of the seventh, but the Union defense locked down after that, allowing only two hits in the final two innings.
Union tallied one final run in the eighth inning. Sheeran knocked a leadoff double down the left field line and moved to third on a sac bunt by junior
Thomas Parisi. An RBI single by Mentzer one batter later gave Sheeran time to cross home.
On the mound, sophomore
Aidan McGee bounced back to improve to 3-3 on the season with five hits, three runs, and six strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. First-year
Jack Klein pitched 2.1 innings of relief and allowed three runs on three hits and five walks with one strikeout. Senior
Jason Goldblum earned his third save of the year with one hit and two strikeouts in the final 1.1 innings.
Union returns to Liberty League play with a doubleheader against the Hobart College Statesmen on Saturday. First pitch of game one is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Shuttleworth Park.
