Union's Bats Come Alive in Sweep of MCLA

NORTH ADAMS, MASS. – Eight members of the Union College softball recorded multiple hits as the Dutchwomen cruised to back to back wins over the Trailblazers of MCLA on Tuesday afternoon. Union won game one 8-3 and game two 12-0. Senior Amanda Granato went 6-8 in both games with three runs scored and an RBI in the lead-off spot for Union. Classmate Karson Saunders went 5-9 with three runs scored, four RBI, and a double. First-year Ellie Wintringer also had a great day from the batter's box, plating six RBI in the twinbill.

Game One: Union College 8, MCLA 3

MCLA opened the scoring in game one with opening frame, thanks to a single. In the second inning, Union evened things up with a run in the top of the second inning. Granato, who started the game on the mound, helped herself out with an RBI single to center field that scored sophomore Tatum Perkins to even the game at 1-1.

In the top of the fifth inning, Union earned their first lead after senior Olivia Valery singled to open the inning. She advanced to second and then to third following a ground out and then a single by sophomore Nahnny Sobetzko. Perkins hit a sac fly to right field that scored Valery from third base.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Trailblazers tied the game after a solo home run. After a walk to open the top of the sixth inning by sophomore Melody Kappel, Saunders laid down a sac bunt and pushed Kappel to second base. Classmate Hannah Mitchell singled to right field and score Kappel from second base as Union grabbed a 3-2 lead.

The Dutchwomen extended their lead to 8-2 after scoring five runs in the inning. First-year Haley Gibbons walked and then senior Tara Hartnett doubled to right center, moving Gibbons to third. Sophomore Autumn Duff helped herself on the mount with a single to left field that scored Gibbons from third.

Kappel walked to load the bases with one out. Saunders then singled and advanced to second on an error by the short stop and scored both Hartnett and Duff. Union lead 6-2 following the Saunders single. Wintringer continued to Union's big inning, with a double to left field that scored both Kappel and Saunders to give Union an 8-2 lead.

The Trailblazers scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs, by losing 8-3 to Union in game one. Duff (2-3) earned her second win of the season thanks to four innings pitched and struck out four batters and allowed two runs.

Game Two: Union College 12, MCLA 0

Unlike game one, for the start of the game Union grabbed a lead and did not let the Trailblazers get close. Union plated three runners in the first inning to grab a 3-0 lead. Union's first four batters recorded hits in the game. Granato singled to left field to open the game. Kappel followed up Granato's hit with a single of her own. Saunders then batted and singled to right field, scoring Granato from second base.

Wintringer then batted with a 1-0 lead, and singled into center field and scored Kappel and Saunders, after the base runner's advanced on a wild pitch. Union lead 3-0 after the first inning.
The Dutchwomen, continued to add more runs with another one in the top of the fourth. Hartnett singled to open the inning and after a fly out and a ground out, Saunders batted. The senior outfielder doubled to right field and scored Hartnett to extend Union's lead to 4-0.

In the fifth inning, Union grabbed their fifth run of the game. Sobetzko and Perkins each recorded a hit to put runners on second and third with no outs. Sophomore Riley Callahan singled into left field, scoring Sobetzko for a 5-0 lead for Union.

Wintringer plated her third RBI of the game off a single to left field that scored Granato from second base. Union added to their lead, 6-0. In the seventh inning, Union pulled away for good, scoring six runners to double up their lead and extend it to 12-0. Perkins singled to start the inning. Senior Anna Zdunczyk singled to center field and pushed Perkins to second. Mitchell reached on a fielder's choice, and Perkins moved to third. Hartnett singled to center and scored Perkins and Mitchell, after Mitchell moved to second a wild pitch.

Granato singled to center and advanced Hartnett to second. Kappel walked to load the bases bringing up Saunders. She plated her third RBI of the game with a single to left field. The bases stayed loaded for Wintringer who made it 10-0 with a sac fly that scored Granato. First-year Elizabeth Werner pinch hit for Sobetzko and drew a walk to reload the bases for Union. Perkins then batted and singled to center field, scoring both Kappel and Saunders, and giving Union a 12-0 lead. Union won 12-0.

Kappel pushed her record over .500 (3-2) with the complete game shutout. She struck out four batters and allowed eight hits has Union blanked the Trailblazers.

Union (7-9) will continue their road trip and open conference play against the Bombers of Ithaca College on Saturday, April 15. Game one of the double header is set for 1 p.m. from Ithaca, New York.
