Men's Tennis Clinches Playoff Spot with 6-3 Win at RIT

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Union College men's tennis team won its program-record fourth conference match of the year and clinched a spot in the Liberty League Tournament for the second straight season with a 6-3 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon at the RIT Tennis Courts.

Union (6-7, 4-3 Liberty League) can finish no worse than fifth in the Liberty League standings with one conference match left, which will be the team's best showing in the standings since 2013-14.

RIT (3-11, 0-4 Liberty League) started the day by taking two of the three doubles contests, but Union stormed back to win five of the six singles matches to secure the win. Seven different players had one win apiece for the visitors on the day.

After the Tigers earned wins at first and second doubles, junior Bailey McAtee and sophomore Austin Gregory kept Union in the match with a big win at third doubles. The tandem outlasted Verosh Jayanetti and Brian Bork in an 8-7 (7-3) tiebreaker to keep the visitors from falling into a deep hole.

Union fell behind 3-1 after an RIT win at second singles, but it was all Union from there. Senior Aidan O'Brien took the first set from Bork 6-3 and then saved a pair of set points at 5-6 in the second set before coming back to win in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-3). Junior Khai Ton evened the match at three with his second singles win of the weekend, defeating Brennan Bull, 6-3, 6-4 at the third flight.

Sophomore Ben Jacobs won for the seventh time in the last 10 matches at the top flight, posting a pair of 6-2 frames to defeat Grahith Movva in three sets and give Union the lead. Sophomore Ian Schunk provided the winning point, coming from a set down to defeat Joel Pho in their fifth-singles match, 1-6, 7-5. 6-1, while yesterday's hero, senior Thomas McGuire, put a cap on the day with a hard-fought 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win over Max Chang at sixth singles.

With one conference match to go next weekend, Union will first close out its non-conference slate on Thursday with a matchup at SUNY Oneonta set to begin a 4 p.m.
