CASTLETON, Vt. – The Union College baseball team fell to Castleton University, 10-5, Tuesday afternoon at Spartan Fields.
Junior
Kobe Mentzer had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a homerun, two RBI, and two runs scored.
Union took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Mentzer. After three scoreless innings, Castleton plated two runs in the fourth to take a 2-1 advantage.
Union regained the lead in the sixth with a pair of runs. With runners on second and third, junior
Thomas Parisi hit a double into right field, scoring senior
Jono Santos and Mentzer, to give Union a 4-2 lead. The lead was short-lived as the Spartans tied it up in the bottom of the frame.
Mentzer gave Union a a 5-4 lead with his third homerun of the season in the top of the seventh.
The Spartans scored three in the seventh inning on a three-run homerun and added the final trio of runs in the eighth for the win.
Senior
Matt Beazoglou started for Union, pitching three scoreless innings, surrendering two hits and striking out one. Junior
Kyle Patlove is tagged with the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Union will make up the second half of the doubleheader against Williams College tomorrow in Williamstown, Mass. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Bobby Coombs Field.
