Union Falls to RPI in Game Three of Weekend Series

TROY, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team dropped the final game of the series against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute by a score of 7-5 Sunday afternoon at Robison Field at Karl Steffen Ballpark.

Union falls to 7-7 on the season and 1-2 in Liberty League play while the Engineers move to 12-8-1 and 3-3 in conference play.

First-year Andrew Keaveney made the start at first base and led all Union players at the plate, going 3-for-4 and recorded his first collegiate homerun. Senior Jono Santos hit his second homerun in as many days and went 2-for-5 at the plate.

Union found the scoreboard in the opening stanza. Back-to-back singles followed by a wild pitch put runners on second and third. Junior Kobe Mentzer hit a sac fly into left field for the first run of the inning. One batter later, Santos hit his second homerun of the series, a two-run homerun, to give Union a 3-0 lead.

Keaveney led off the top of the fourth inning with a solo homerun down the right field line to extend Union's lead to four. Mentzer drew a leadoff walk one inning later and capitalized on a pair of errors to cross home.

RPI began to climb back in the fifth inning with three runs scored. An RBI single in the seventh cut Union's lead to one. A two-run homerun by Matt Chotine in the eighth followed by an RBI single later in the frame completed the comeback for the Engineers.

First-year Alex Oppenheimer started for Union and pitched 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and five walks, while striking out eight. Junior Bryce Fournier pitched 2.1 innings in relief allowing two runs on two hits with one strikeout. First-year Jack Klein gave up two runs on two hits in 0.2 innings and senior Jason Goldblum allowed one hit in 0.1 innings of work.

Union has a quick turnaround with a mid-week matchup against Russell Sage College on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m at Central Park Diamond A in Schenectady.
