SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – A strong game on the mound coupled with a solid game at the plate powered the Union College baseball team to a 5-1 nonconference victory over Russell Sage College on Tuesday evening at Central Park in Schenectady.
Union (8-7, 1-2 Liberty League) knocked in three homeruns in a game for the second time in three games. First-year Liam McIlroy hit his first collegiate homerun while junior Kobe Mentzer recorded his first homerun of the season. First-year Caleb Miller registered his second homerun of the season in the win.
McIlroy went 2-for-3 at the plate this evening while first-year Andrew Keaveney scored a pair of runs on a 1-for-3 day.
The hosts opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. After loading the bases, first-year JT Psirogianes grounded into a double play, but Keaveney raced home for the score.
Union opened the fourth inning with a leadoff homerun by Mentzer into right field. Keaveney and junior Thomas Parisi both singled to get on base and a fly out to right field to moved Keaveney to third. After Parisi drew the throw on a successful stolen base attempt, Keaveney raced home for his second run of the game.
Russell Sage (10-12, 4-2 Empire 8) scored their lone run of the game on an RBI double into the outfield.
Union tallied another run in the seventh stanza on a solo homerun by Miller to give the hosts a 4-1 lead. McIlroy added his first collegiate homerun one frame later for the final run of the game.
Sophomore Aidan McGee earned the win to improve to 2-2 on the season. McGee pitched six innings, allowing one run on two hits and struck out a career-high nine batters. Junior Deven Smith was lights out in relief with three scoreless innings and only allowing two hits while fanning two.
Union is back in action on Wednesday with a nonconference tilt against Middlebury College. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at Shuttleworth Park.
