ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team matched the program record for victories in a season with a commanding 8-1 win over SUNY Oneonta in a non-conference matchup at the Dr. Heissan Courts on Thursday afternoon.
Union (9-5) has won its last three matches and has earned eight wins in 10 outings since the beginning of March to tie the program record of nine wins first set in 1982 (9-2) and matched in 1994 (9-3), 1998 (9-2), 2000 (9-3) and 2015-16 (9-7).
Four Union players were double winners on the day, with junior
Gracie Nicol and first-years
Kennedy Alexis,
Chara Meidani and
Skylar Semon all earning wins in both singles and doubles play. In all, seven players had at least one victory in the final non-conference match of the regular season.
The doubles pairings shuffled around again on Thursday, but it did not make a difference as Union swept all three matches and conceded only eight total games to start the day. Sophomore
Paige Tromblee and first-year
Sydney Alphabet got Union on the board with an 8-2 win over Danielle Copp and Jessica Harris at the third flight. Semon and Nicol teamed up for an 8-3 second-doubles win over Sophia Schutte and Brianna Shaw, and the tandem of Alexis and Meidani won for the second time in three attempts at first doubles with an 8-3 victory over Julia Holtermann and Maxie Karen.
Alexis started the scoring in singles play, earning her first career dual match singles win with a pair of 6-2 sets over Madelyn Brophy at the sixth flight, and sophomore
Gabby Gatto provided the clinching point with a 6-4, 6-0 third-singles triumph over Karen. Meidani extended her singles winning streak to eight with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Schutte at the second flight, and Semon moved up to the fourth flight for a 6-2, 6-1 win over Shaw. Nicol came back from a set down to earn her first win in three tries at first singles, overcoming Holterman in a 3-6, 6-2, (10-3) victory.
Junior
Kate Hirnak came a supertiebreaker short from completing the sweep for Union, falling 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), (10-6) to Copp at fifth singles.
Union will close out the regular season tomorrow, when the team hosts #38 Vassar College for Senior Day beginning at 5 p.m. at the Union Tennis Courts.
