TROY, N.Y. – The Union College softball team faced off against Liberty League rival RPI on Saturday afternoon from Doris Robison Field. Union lost both games to RPI 3-0 and 10-2. Senior
Karson Saunders became Union's new single season stolen base record holder.
In the top of first inning, Saunders stole third base to set Union's new single season stolen base record. She was tied with Robin Romer at 16 stolen bases that was set in 1991. Saunders now holds the new record with 17 stolen bases.
Game One: RPI 3, Union College 0
RPI blanked Union (10-14, 3-5 LL) in the first game of a doubleheader with a 3-0 win. Errors plagued the Dutchwomen in the first game. The Engineers scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning. RPI extended their lead to 3-0 in the third inning with three hits and scored two runs on Union errors in the inning to take control and cruised to a game one win.
Senior
Amanda Granato (3-7) was tabbed with the loss. She threw a six-inning complete game. She struck out two batters and allowed four hots and one earned run.
Game Two: RPI 10, Union 2 (6 innings)
The Engineers used an eight run third inning to grab a commanding 8-2 lead and cruised to a 10-2 final. Union grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning. The Dutchwomen used a pair of RPI errors to score to take a 1-0 lead. RPI responded with two singles and a walk to even the score 1-1.
In the top of the third inning, Union grabbed a 2-1 lead off a double from first-year
Ellie Wintringer and scored Saunders from first base. Thee Engineers responded once again, but this time with an eight run third inning to grab a commanding lead. The Engineers won 10-2 over Union in game two.
Sophomore
Melody Kappel (4-4) was tabbed with the loss for Union. She threw four innings of work and struck out five batters in the effort. Sophomore
Autumn Duff pitched 1.1 innings in relief.
Union will look to get back on track as they welcome in Sage College for a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon from Alexander Field. Game one is set to begin at 3 p.m.
