AMSTERDAM, N.Y. – The Union College baseball registered a season-high 19 hits to get back in the win column with a decisive 11-3 victory over Wesleyan University on Tuesday night at Shuttleworth Park.
Juniors
Anthony Ruzzo,
Thomas Parisi, and
Kobe Mentzer, sophomore
Kyle Zaslaw and
Dan Sheeran, and first-year
Liam McIlroy all registered a multi-hit night for Union. Zaslaw had a career day at the plate, recording his first multi-hit game in a day that saw him go 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Mentzer led the way with a pair of doubles. Mentzer recorded his first career game with multiple extra-base hits after hitting two doubles on the night.
Union took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and did not look back. After Sheeran singled and first-year
Caleb Miller walked to lead off the inning, Mentzer singled through the right side to give Union a 1-0 lead. Miller capitalized on a wild pitch to make it a 2-0 game.
The hosts added a third run in the second on an RBI single by Miller to score Sheeran. With bases loaded in the third, Zaslaw and Ruzzo knocked back-to-back RBI singles to take a 5-0 lead. Sheeran hit a sac fly into left to make it 6-0.
Wesleyan got on the board in the fourth inning, but Union was quick to regain a six-run lead in the bottom of the frame when Mentzer stole home.
Union reached double-digits with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 11-1 lead. With runners on second and third, Parisi lined an RBI double into left field. Senior
Colby Nash followed up with a sac fly and Zaslaw drove in a run on a single. Sheeran knocked in the final run with an RBI single into left field.
Senior
Matt Beazoglou earned the start and allowed one hit in three innings of work with one strikeout. Classmate
Ben Mlavsky pitched three innings with one runs on four hits and a strikeout. First-year
Will Collins surrendered one run, unearned, in two innings or work, and senior
Harry Azadian gave up one run, unearned, and no hits with two strikeouts.
Union is back in action tomorrow with a game at Trinity College. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Murren Family Field.
