ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Union College baseball team dropped a Liberty League doubleheader to Bard College this afternoon at Honey Field. Union fell in a close 6-4 game before dropping a 10-4 decision in the final game of the series.
Junior
Kobe Mentzer went 4-for-8 on the day with three RBIs and a run scored and first-year
JT Psirogianes went 3-for-6 with three runs scored.
Game One: Bard 6, Union 4
Union opened the scoring early with two runs in the first inning. Mentzer recorded Union's first hit of the day, a triple to left field, to set up senior
Jono Santos for the RBI single one batter later. Santos stole second and junior
Thomas Parisi followed up with an RBI single of his own to give the visitors an early 2-0 lead. Bard was quick to respond in the bottom of the frame. With runners on second and third, a triple to right field tied the game at two.
Union tacked on two more runs in the top of the second stanza. Sophomore
Dan Sheeran scored from third after first-year
Cooper Ames grounded out to second and a single by Mentzer one better later brought Psirogianes across home. Bard responded again with three singles in a row to cut Union's lead to one.
Bard plated three runs in the sixth inning to take game one.
Senior
Ben Mlavsky pitched 5.1 innings allowing four runs on six hits while striking out two. Sophomore
Aidan McGee is tagged the loss and falls to 2-3 on the year. McGee pitched 0.2 innings, allowing two runs on one hit and four walks.
Game Two: Bard 10, Union 4
Mentzer and first-year
Caleb Miller each recorded two hits in the loss.
Bard jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first two innings and did not look back.
Union found the board in the third inning. After Psirogianes was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, the first-year made it to second on a balk. An RBI single by Miller two batters later gave Union a run.
Bard added runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take an 8-1 lead.
Miller led off the sixth inning with a double down the right field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. An RBI single by Mentzer brought Miller home.
Trailing 10-2 going into the seventh, Union recorded two more runs. Psirogianes hit a double down the right field line and two batters later, junior
Ryan Cowles drove an RBI double down the line for the score. Mentzer singled through the right side to bring Cowles cross home for Union's final run.
First-year
Alex Oppenheimer falls to 1-1 on the season after pitching three innings and giving up five runs, two earned, on five hits, three walks, and three strikeouts. Junior
Deven Smith entered the game in relief and pitched three innings, allowing five runs on four hits, two walks and a strikeout. Sophomore
Alex Erickson pitched the final two innings and only gave up one hit and one walk while striking out one.
Union returns to the field on Tuesday for a nonconference tilt with SUNY Oneonta. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Shuttleworth Park.
