SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team dropped a 13-10 decision to Castleton University Tuesday afternoon at Central Park Diamond A.
Senior
Jono Santos went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, falling a triple short of the cycle, with two RBI and two runs scored. Santos' homerun in the fourth inning ties his mark from last season at seven. Santos is now tied with Andy Labeck '19 for third place in Union's career home runs list with 14 homeruns.
Three additional Union batters recorded multi-hit games and all nine Union starters registered a hit. First-year
Cooper Ames, sophomore
Kyle Zaslaw, and senior
Jack Milone all went 2-for-5 at the plate.
The Spartans jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first three and a half innings. Union cut the lead in the bottom of the third stanza with an RBI single by first-year
Liam McIlroy.
The Union bats tacked on five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Zaslaw scored on a wild pitch, junior
Thomas Parisi hit a bunt single and Milone raced home to tie the game. Junior
Kobe Mentzer gave Union the lead with a sac fly before Santos sent a two-run blast over the wall to give Union a 6-3 lead.
Union took a 7-3 lead in the sixth. Senior
Jack Davis doubled down the left field line and moved to third on a sac bunt by Parisi. A groundout by first-year
Cooper Ames gave Davis time to race home.
The seventh saw Castleton plate four runs to tie the game at seven apiece. Union regained the lead in the bottom of the frame with three runs scored. With two runners in scoring position, Zaslaw and Milone hit back-to-back singles to take a two-run lead. Zaslaw scored after senior
Jack Davis hit a sac bunt to give Union a 10-7 lead.
Castleton scored six runs in the final two innings to take a 13-10 victory.
Senior
Matt Beazoglou got the nod and pitched a career-high five complete innings. Beazoglou scattered three hits, surrendered three runs and a struck out a career-high four batters. Sophomore
Alex Erickson is tagged with the loss and falls to 2-1 on the season. Erickson pitched 0.2 innings and allowed four runs, all earned, on one hit and three walks with one strikeout.
Union returns to action this weekend in a best-of-three series against St. Lawrence University beginning on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Shuttleworth Park.
