AMSTERDAM, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team split a doubleheader against St. Lawrence University to force a game three in the series on Saturday afternoon at Shuttleworth Park. Union won decisively in game one with a 17-2, but the visiting Saints stormed back to take game two, 9-2.
Game One: Union 17, St. Lawrence 2
First-year
Caleb Miller was a double short of the cycle as he went 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Senior
Colby Nash went 1-for-1 with a homerun and three RBI while junior
Thomas Parisi also went yard in a 2-for-2 effort with two runs scored and a RBI.
After a scoreless first, St. Lawrence took a 1-0 lead on a solo homerun by Jimmy Liberatore. Union was quick to respond with two runs on a sac fly by senior
Dan Choate and an RBI double by fellow senior
Jack Milone.
Union tacked on an additional four runs in the third, highlighted by a solo blast by Parisi over the left field fence. The offense continued to pour on in the fourth inning after Milone scored on a wild pitch and Miller went yard with a two-run homerun into centerfield to give Union a 9-1 lead.
Sophomore
Dan Sheeran drove in a pair of runs on an RBI single in the fifth and junior
Kobe Mentzer drove in a run as well on an RBI single. Milone reached on a bases-loaded fielder's choice to bring in Union's 13
th run of the game.
The Saints scored their final run on an RBI single in the seventh. A three-run blast by Nash in the eighth and an RBI single by Mentzer capped Union's scoring.
Sophomore
Chris Suter earned his fifth win of the season. Suter pitched six complete innings and allowed one run on eight hits, three walks, with three strikesouts. Senior
Ben Mlavsky allowed one run on two hits in two innings of work and fellow senior
Harry Azadian closed out the game with a scoreless inning with only one hit.
Game Two: St. Lawrence 9, Union 2
Parisi continued his hot day at the plate with a pair of doubles and two RBI.
After two scoreless innings, Union broke through in the third. With runners on second and third, Parisi line a double into left field for the score.
The Saints quickly tied the game in the top of the fourth after John Donnellan capitalized on a bad throw to score the tying run. A sac fly in the fifth gave the Saints a 2-1 lead.
St. Lawrence loaded the bases in the sixth, prompting a pitching change for Union. Three straight singles and a two-run homerun gave the visitors a 9-2 lead.
Mentzer drew a leadoff walk and advanced on a wild pitch. Parisi knocked his second double of the day to left center to score Mentzer.
First-year
Alex Oppenheimer is tagged with the loss. Oppenheimer pitched five innings and surrendered five runs, four earned, on six hits, four walks, and five strikeouts. Fellow first-year
Andrew Keaveney allowed four runs on four hits in one inning of work. Azadian made his second appearance of the day and pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
Union and St. Lawrence will take the field for game three tomorrow at noon at Shuttleworth Park.
