Men's Tennis Sweeps Bard to Begin Conference Action

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Six players earned a pair of victories as the Union College men's tennis team started Liberty League play with a 9-0 sweep of Bard College on Wednesday afternoon at Stevenson Courts.

Juniors Seth Prusko and Austin Gregory and sophomore Christian Crowder led the way for Union (1-0, 1-0 Liberty League) by picking up wins in both singles and doubles play. Three Union first-years also earned their first collegiate dual match victories, as Solen Bellemare, Shreyas Kode and Daniel Saxe all picked up two wins as well.

Union started the day off well by dropping only six games in the three doubles matches. Prusko and Saxe earned the first point of the day with an 8-0 win at first doubles over Faisal Jones and Thanasis Kostikas, followed by Crowder and Kode's 8-2 third-doubles victory over Yashar Khan and Johannes Furtwangler. Bellemare and Gregory completed the doubles sweep by besting Augustin Johnson and Sam Marcus by an 8-4 score at second doubles.

Singles play proved to be even more decisive for the Garnet Chargers, as Union dropped only five games in the six matches. Bellemare (first singles) and Kode (fifth singles) both earned double-bagel wins over Kostikas and Furtwangler, respectively. Three others needed only one extra game to earn victories: Saxe defeated Marcus, 6-0, 6-1 at second singles; Prusko took down Johnson, 6-1, 6-0 at the third flight; and Gregory got the best of Khan, 6-1, 6-0, in fourth-singles play. Crowder completed the sweep by defeating Jones with a pair of 6-1 sixth-singles sets.

Union will finish up its fall slate next weekend at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships, held at Drew University beginning on September 29.
