MADISON, N.J. – The Union College men's tennis team earned a pair of main-draw singles victories on day one of the 2023 ITA Northeast Regional Championships, hosted by Drew University on Friday.
Seniors
Dimitris Binopoulos and
Khai Ton both advanced to day two with first-round victories on Friday. Binopoulos picked up a quick win in his first-round match, cruising past Gabe Escobar of Rochester Institute of Technology in an 8-2 victory. Ton also earned a first-round victory with a tiebreaker win, squeaking past Mikah Liu of Pratt Institute, 8-7 (7-3).
First-year
Solen Bellemare dropped an 8-5 decision to Matt Michibata of the College of New Jersey to round out Union singles play on day one.
In doubles action, Binopoulos and junior
Ben Jacobs came up one break short in an 8-6 loss to Tsubi Okada and Max Safanov of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Junior
Austin Gregory and first-year
Keita Fukushima also took to the court for Union on day one, dropping an 8-4 decision to Ithaca College's Gijs Fidler and Emiliano Fedrero.
Union will return to the courts tomorrow for day two of the ITA Northeast Regionals beginning at 9 a.m.
