Women's Tennis Starts League Play with Sweep of Bard

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – All six players earned two victories apiece as the Union College women's tennis team got its Liberty League schedule off to a good start with a 9-0 sweep of Bard College on Wednesday afternoon at Stevenson Courts.

Senior Kate Hirnak and sophomore Skylar Semon both did not lose a game in either singles play in doubles play to lead Union (1-0, 1-0 Liberty League) on Wednesday. Senior Gracie Nicol, juniors Gabby Gatto and Paige Tromblee, and first-year Luisa Arizpe-Sierra all earned two wins as well for the visitors on the day.

Union asserted itself quickly in doubles play, dropping only two games combined in jumping out to an early lead. Semon and Hirnak started their perfect days with an 8-0 win at third doubles over Dana Mulco and Izzi Popolizio. The team followed with a pair of 8-1 wins, as Arizpe-Sierra and Tromblee defeated Paige Houghton and Bella Ries at the top flight and the tandem of Nicol and Gatto did the same to Lapis Dove and Sage Saccomanno at second doubles.

Singles play did not provide much drama, either, with four matches ending in double-bagel victories for the Garnet Chargers. Arizpe-Sierra earned her first collegiate dual match singles win at first singles, sweeping Hanna Okalava. Nicol and Semon added a pair of 6-0 sets each to defeat Houghton and Ries at second and third singles, respectively. Hirnak also had a 6-0, 6-0 win at sixth singles over Josie Smith. Gatto needed only one extra game to defeat Dove, 6-1, 6-0, while Tromblee battled through a tough first set to take down Popolizio in fifth-singles action, 7-5, 6-1.

Union will finish off its fall schedule this weekend with two events, as some team members head to the New Paltz Invitational on Saturday and others begin play at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships in Geneva, N.Y. on Saturday as well.
