Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team sent four singles players and two doubles teams to compete on day one of the annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regional Championships, held at William Smith College on Saturday.
In singles action, senior
Gracie Nicol earned a victory for Union, as she cruised past Misericordia University's Emily Brecker, 6-2, 6-3 in first-round action. Her run ended in the second round, however, where she dropped a 6-1, 6-0 match to 9-16 seeded Kira Kronenberg of Rochester Institute of Technology.
First-year
Luisa Arizpe-Sierra battled against 5-8 seeded Angelia Aksdal-Jensen of St. Lawrence University, nearly coming back from a 5-1 deficit in the first set and an 0-3 hole in the second set. She saved three match points at 4-5 in the second stanza before finally succumbing in a 6-4, 7-5 defeat.
Sophomore
Chara Meidani came up a few points short as well after battling back to force a supertiebraeker against Pratt's Pallavi Verghese, dropping a 6-3, 4-6, (10-8) matchup. Sophomore
Skylar Semon also fought hard against 5-8 seed Macey Dowd of Vassar College before falling in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Both Union doubles entries lost in the first round as well on Saturday. Nicol and Arizpe-Sierra came up one break short in an 8-6 loss to Elyse Duley and Maddie Kirby of Vassar, while Meidani and sophomore
Kennedy Alexis also came up just short in an 8-5 loss to Beilynn Geiss and Katie Wong of Skidmore College.
Union will return to the courts tomorrow for consolation matches to finish off the 2023-24 fall season.
