SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – First-year
Amy Vytopilova scored her first collegiate goal and added an assist to help Union College dig out of an early two-goal hole, but #22 Hamilton College added the game-winner early in the fourth quarter and held on for a 3-2 win over the Garnet Chargers in a non-conference field hockey matchup on Wednesday evening at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
Vytopilova and sophomore
Megan Dorsey both had three points on the night for Union (3-6), with both players scoring a goal and assisting on the other's tally. Delaney Grace had two goals, including the game-winner in the fourth quarter, for nationally ranked Hamilton (5-3).
The Continentals outshot Union 5-1 in the opening half and went into the break with a 1-0 lead thanks to an 12th-minute tally by Lilly Truchon.
The visitors added to their lead 2:09 into the third period, but Union responded with two goals in less than four minutes to even the score. Vytopilova scored her first collegiate tally with 10:02 left in the frame, taking a feed from Dorsey and threading a shot through traffic into the far-side corner. Just over three minutes later, the roles were reversed as Dorsey took a pass from Vytopilova and fired a rocket into the net for her team-leading fifth goal of the year.
The teams went into the final frame with the scored tied at two, but the deadlock did not last long as Grace scored her second of the night 38 seconds into the period to give Hamilton the lead for good.
The Continentals finished the game with an 11-4 edge in shots and took eight corners to Union's five. Sophomore
Marion Stuntz earned her second start of the year and made three saves on four shots over the first 30 minutes, while sophomore
Sophie Brady made one stop in the second half. Abby Griffin made two saves to earn the win for Hamilton.
Union will return to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. Liberty League matchup at St. Lawrence University.
