SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Senior
Amanda Sgueglia's 16th-minute goal would be the only one in Union College's women's soccer match at Western New England Wednesday, giving the Garnet Chargers the 1-0 victory over the Golden Bears.
After Western New England lofted a goal kick that went just past the midfield line, Union played it back the other way. After four Union touches that played the ball back in their offensive direction, Sgueglia took advantage of some space given by the defense and a goalie playing off her line to score from well beyond the 18-yard box and provide Union the 1-0 advantage.
The Garnet Chargers did not stop there. Union tallied four more shots before the halftime break, including three on net, totaling first-half advantages in shots (7-1), shots on goal (5-0), and corner kicks (4-2). First-year
Maya Koster took over for sophomore
Rachel Berliner in goal and made three saves in the second half to preserve the victory.
Sgueglia's first goal of the season would hold up to be her second career game-winner, as the senior also scored the lone goal in Union's 1-0 victory over Utica last September. The senior now sits fourth on the team in points this season with three.
Union (3-3-2) returns to Liberty League play on Saturday when the Garnet Chargers host Rensselaer as part of Homecoming and Family Weekend. Kickoff from College Park Field is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
