Women's Soccer Shuts Out Previously Undefeated Rensselaer

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Union College women's soccer team picked up a big time win Saturday afternoon, knocking off undefeated crosstown rival Rensselaer by a score of 2-0.

In the 19th minute, Amanda Squeglia set up with the possession at the top corner of the 18-yard box. She fired an airborne pass to Alayna Boileau, stationed at the center of the box, who dropped a beautiful one-touch backheel pass to Liz DiCecco, who fired a strike on the run past the diving goalkeeper to give Union the lead.

The Garnet Chargers added to their lead five minutes after halftime, as DiCecco was on the giving end of the Union goal this time. DiCecco gained possession directly across the field from where her goal first originated, at the top corner of the other 18-yard box. The Millville, Massachusetts native sent in a cross to the top of the goalie box that took a high bounce over a Rensselaer defender, and Vanessa Jorgensen found herself in the right place at the right time, lifting a header over the oncoming goalie who came across to defend the other side of the net.

DiCecco's and Jorgensen's goals were each their first of the season.

Each team put five shots on goal in the second half, and six total in the game Rachel Berliner stopped all six shots she faced in the contest, and has now put together three consecutive and four out of five scoreless appearances. The six saves are her second-most this season, only behind the seven shots she faced two games ago in her shutout against Vassar.

The win is also Union's first Liberty League victory of the season. The Garnet Chargers are now 1-1-1 in conference play this season.

Union (4-3-2) heads west to Morrisville for a 6:00 PM match on Tuesday before returning home, and to Liberty League action, next Saturday, when they host Bard at College Park Field at 2:00 PM.
