Women's Soccer Begins Home Slate with 3-0 Win over Wheaton

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior Sam Friedman scored her second goal in as many games this season and first-years Gillian Paseka and Taylor Bovardi added their first collegiate goals to help the Union College women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Wheaton College on Sunday afternoon at College Park Field.

Six different players recorded points for Union in the win, including four players picking up their first collegiate points. In addition to Paseka and Bovardi's goals, fellow first-years Ashley Sheldon and Delaney McNinch also picked up assists for their first collegiate points as well.

Friedman got the scoring started in the 19th minute, finding the net for the second straight contest. Sheldon played a great throughball to spring Friedman for a one-on-one chance against Wheaton keeper Patricia Bandrup, and her shot caromed off Bandrup and then back off Friedman into the open net.

The Union lead doubled in the 29th minute thanks to Paseka, who netted her first collegiate tally by tucking a shot just under the crossbar off a feed from senior Cassidy Careccia.

Union finished the first half with a 4-1 edge in on-target attempts, while Friedman nearly had another tally when her fourth-minute shot bounced off the crossbar.

Bovardi added to the lead in the 51st minute, when a long cross by McNinch was deflected past Bandrup right to the first-year for an easy tap-in tally.

Union finished the game with a 13-10 edge in shots and also took seven corners to Wheaton's three. Sophomore Rachel Berliner and Maya Koster combined to earn the shutout in goal, with Berliner making one first-half save and Koster denying three shots in the second stanza.

The Garnet Chargers will return to action on Thursday, when they host Smith College at 7 p.m. at College Park Field.
