TROY, N.Y. -
Wyatt Goldfisher's 72nd minute goal would lift the Union College Garnet Chargers to a victory over their crosstown rival Rensselaer Saturday, 2-1.
Â
Goldfisher would go on a run directly to the net from right around midfield as
Ethan Layton bumped off an Engineers defender near the sideline in a bout for a 50/50 ball to win possession. Layton would make one touch and loft a cross in the direction of Goldfisher, would played it down between two RPI defenders, and fired a left-footed strike off a bounce directly over the goalkeeper.
Â
Robbie Michalski opened the scoring just over 27 minutes into the game, as the senior potted his own rebound off a free kick played in the box to give the Garnet Chargers the 1-0 lead.
Â
The Engineers tied the game at 54:14 after Josh Gaudiano scored from almost the same spot Michalski did 27 minutes earlier.
Â
Goldfisher's heroics would account for his second game winner of the season. Goldfisher's fourth goal of the season would best the total he put up in his first two seasons combined at Union.
Â
Michalski and Goldfisher now are tied atop the Garnet Chargers goal leaderboard with four apiece.
Â
Paul Agne stopped four shots en route to picking up the win.
Â
The win marks Union's first victory over RPI in almost five years.
Â
Union (4-4-2) return to action Tuesday in their final non-conference game of the season. The Garnet Chargers are set to host Elmira at College Park Field at 5:00 PM.
