SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Four goals from the special teams was the difference maker as the Union College men's hockey team defeated Clarkson University 5-1 on Friday night at Messa Rink.
Five different skaters found the back of the night and three registered a multi-point night. Senior
Ville Immonen and sophomore
John Prokop recorded a goal and an assist each while senior
Liam Robertson tallied two assists. Senior
Tyler Watkins scored the lone even strength goal for Union. Sophomore
Brandon Buhr registered his fourth power-play goal of the season and classmate
Carter Korpi recorded a short-handed goal for the game winner.
Korpi's third short-handed marker this year is the most since Mike Vecchione '17 scored four in the 2016-17 season. This also marks Union's sixth short-handed goal this season, the most since the 2016-17 team that scored seven.
Union opened the scoring at 8:22 of the first period. Junior
Cullen Ferguson attempted a wraparound shot, but the puck bounced off of Austin Roden's pads. Sophomore
Colby MacArthur redirected the puck to Watkins and the senior sent the one-timer past Austin Roden for his fourth goal of the season. The lead was short-lived as Anthony Romano scored less than a minute later.
Korpi scored the eventual game-winning goal in the second period. First-year
Jacob Jeannette won a faceoff in the Union end of the ice and passed it back to sophomore
Cal Mell. The blueliner chipped it ahead to Korpi and the sophomore went in on a breakaway and scored. A five-minute major on Kaelan Taylor late in the middle stanza put Union on the powerplay. Prokop fired a shot from the blueline through traffic to put the hosts up 3-1 after 40 minutes.
Union scored a second power-play goal when Buhr found the back of the net against his former team for his team-leading fourth power-play tally. A shot from Robertson bounced loose in the crease and Buhr was there to cleanup the rebound. On Union's second five-minute powerplay, junior
Josh Nixon fired a shot from the slot, and Immonen was there to cash in the rebound.
Sophomore
Kyle Chauvette made 34 saves for the win while Roden made 19 saves in the loss.
Union closes out the homestand tomorrow against St. Lawrence University. Puck drop for the Hockey is for Everyone game is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Messa Rink.
