Special Teams the Difference in Women's Hockey Loss to #4 Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Union College women's hockey team finished off their five-game road trip on Saturday afternoon, falling to #4 Clarkson by a score of 4-0 at Cheel Arena.

Clarkson rode the laurels of their nationally top-five ranked special teams units to the victory, with their fifth-ranked power play finishing 2-for-2 on the afternoon and the nation's best penalty kill squashing all three of Union's advantage opportunities.

The two teams would play to a scoreless tie after the first 20 minutes, a period where neither team could gain control of the pace of play for an extended length. Clarkson went into the first intermission with a 7-6 shots on goal advantage, but Union registered the two most dangerous chances of the opening period thanks to good looks on net from junior Emma Hebert and first-year Emma Fulawka.

Clarkson wasted no time breaking the scoreless draw in the second. After the Golden Knights controlled the opening faceoff and pinned the Garnet Chargers in their own end, Jenna Goodwin's third goal of the year gave Clarkson the lead 90 seconds into the period before Darcie Lappan scored on the power play on Clarkson's next shot on goal to make it 2-0. Keira Hurry made it 2-for-2 on the advantage at the 17:28 mark to give Clarkson a 3-0 advantage heading into the final period of play.

Union battled throughout the third period looking to break the ice, but would be unable to solve Clarkson goaltender Julia Minotti who would go on to finish her third consecutive shutout. Sena Catterall's eighth goal of the season would give Clarkson the 4-0 lead they would possess the rest of the way with nine minutes left.

Junior Sophie Matsoukas stopped 20 of the 24 shots she faced in Union's net before sophomore Emily Evans rejected all four attempts she saw in relief of Matsoukas. Offensively, senior Emily King led Union with seven shots, while Hebert, not afraid to hop into Union's offense in the contest, was next on the team with six.

Saturday's contest concluded the latter of Union's two season-long five-game road trips. Union will return to Messa Rink on Friday to kick off a stretch of five games in the Capital Region- four on home ice and the fifth being the Capital District Mayors Cup at MVP Arena- for the program's annual Pink the Rink game, when the Garnet Chargers take on Dartmouth at 6:00.
