Garnet Chargers Drop 2024 Opener to Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Union College women's basketball team started off the 2024 portion of its season on Friday evening, falling to Ithaca College by a 70-43 score in Liberty League action at Ben Light Gymnasium.

Junior Jenna Forman led Union (3-8, 2-2 Liberty League) with 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals on the evening, while sophomore Grace Arcoleo added nine points. Junior Jelena Perovic chipped in six points and six rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench for the Garnet Chargers as well.

Camryn Coffey paced four Bombers in double figures with a game-high 12 points, followed by Hannah Polce with 11 points. In addition, Annabella Yorio and Junie Dickson added 10 points apiece for Ithaca (8-2, 2-1 Liberty League).

After the Bombers scored on the opening possession, Union held the home team scoreless for more than three minutes and took a 3-2 lead after a three-point play from senior Kennedy Clark. The visitors grabbed the lead again following a Forman layup with 5:53 to go in the opening period, but Ithaca closed on a 14-4 run to take an 18-9 lead after 10 minutes. A pair of double-digit runs gave the Bombers some cushion in the second stanza, as the Garnet Chargers shot 3-of-14 from the field to fall behind 39-16 at the half.

Union started to see a few more shots fall in the second half. After scoring 14 points in the third period, the Garnet Chargers finished the game strong with a 11-0 start to the fourth, led by three points from Arcoleo and two each from Perovic, Forman, senior Grace Enselek and first-year Davita Honig. Union forced seven turnovers and outscored Ithaca 13-6 in the final frame.

Despite the late surge, Union still shot just 26.7 percent (16 of 60) from the field on the evening, while Ithaca connected at a 42.9 percent (27 of 63) clip.

Union will return to action tomorrow with a 2 p.m. game at Skidmore College.
