SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Union College women's basketball team could not overcome a tough third quarter as the Garnet Chargers dropped a 66-40 Liberty League contest to Skidmore College on Saturday afternoon at Williamson Sports Center.
Ten different players got on the scoresheet for Union (3-9, 2-3 Liberty League) on the afternoon, led by sophomore
Grace Arcoleo with seven points. First-year
Morgan Schultz grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds and senior
Grace Enselek had a pair of blocks for the Garnet Chargers as well.
Julia Blanck and Amelia Medolla scored a game-high 10 points each for Skidmore (9-3, 4-1 Liberty League), with Blanck also adding a team-best 12 boards. Maddie Hastings chipped in eight points and eight rebounds as well for the home team.
Skidmore started the game with 10 straight points to take the early advantage, and Union got the lead down to seven after 10 minutes following a last-minute three from first-year
Ally Burke. The visitors used a 9-2 run to even the score at 23 after a jumper from junior
Sophia Poplyk with 3:34 on the clock, but the Thoroughbreds scored nine straight points to eventually take a 32-25 lead into the locker rooms.
After hanging with the Thoroughbreds in the first half, Union was done in by a 13-2 third quarter that saw the home team extend its advantage into double figures. The Garnet Chargers missed all 10 shots from the field and turned the ball over four times in the period to allow Skidmore to take a 45-27 lead into the fourth frame. Skidmore scored 18 of the fourth quarter's final 24 points to build up its largest lead of the game at 63-33 with 3:39 remaining, and Union closed on a 7-3 mini-run to account for the final score.
Union finished the afternoon shooting 31.4 percent (16 of 51) from the field, while Skidmore hit 38.5 percent (25 of 65) from the floor but also used a 47-30 edge on the glass to take 14 more shots than the visitors.
Union will return to Viniar Athletic Center for the first time in over a month on Tuesday with a 5:30 p.m. matchup against Bard College.
