Chiarelli Scores First Career Goal in Loss at #15 Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - #15 Penn State used two goals in each of the three periods to defeat Union at Pegula Ice Arena on Saturday afternoon, taking the victory to ensure a series split, 6-2.

Adding to their list of milestones accomplished this season, sophomore Ella Chiarelli scored her first collegiate goal in the contest. Senior Celeste Beaudoin scored Union's other goal, her fourth in the last four games.

For the second straight day, Penn State tallied the game's opening goal, scoring 3:22 into the contest. Karolina Hengelmüller took a pass and fired a shot from the faceoff dot to the right of first-year Monja Wagner, and her attempt would deflect off the stick from the outstretched reach of first-year Emma Fulawka, fluttering into the air and past Wagner to give the Nittany Lions the early lead.

After Union took less than a minute to respond with a goal of their own in Friday evening's contest, the hosts wasted no time in making sure they added some insurance. Less than two minutes after Hengelmüller's goal, Lyndie Lobdell picked up a loose puck at the center of Penn State's offensive blue line, carried to the top of the circles, and ripped home a wrister to extend the Penn State lead to two.

Another strong start for Penn State saw them outshoot Union in the first period by a 14-5 tally. However, Union wasted no time in the second period bringing the game back to within one. After Penn State forward Julie Gough picked up a loose puck at her defensive blue line and carried back behind her own net looking to set up a play, Union chased with a strong forecheck. Sophomore Riley Walsh met Gough behind the cage and forced her off the puck before proceeding to lift the stick of Hengelmüller to gain possession, and found Beaudoin at the side of the net, who deposited her fourth goal of the season to make it a 2-1 deficit 24 seconds into the middle frame.

That would be as close as Union got the rest of the way, as Penn State brought their lead back up to two off a Katelyn Roberts goal at 6:33 of the second and pushed it up to three thanks to a Gough power-play goal 43 seconds later.

Union would come back with another quick response, as Chiarelli cashed in her first Union goal 16 seconds later. After junior Emma Hebert saw her shot from the point get blocked, Chiarelli picked up the puck up for grabs in the middle of the slot. The Toronto, Ontario native carried on her forehand towards the left circle, and her shot deflected off her defender's stick and past the goalie for her first goal in garnet to make it a 4-2 game.

Penn State added back to their lead with two more power-play goals in the third to provide the 6-2 final.

After a strong stretch of penalty killing dating back two months for the Garnet Chargers, Penn State cashed in three times on their five opportunities on the afternoon. Union's power play unit did not receive a chance in the contest.

Sophomore Emily Evans stopped 23 of the 25 shots she faced in her 32:44 of time in Union's net, with the lone goals allowed coming in the third from Penn State's power play.

Penn State finished with a 48-14 advantage in the shots category while picking up the win in the faceoff circle, 28-24.

After picking up their second ever win over a ranked opponent on Friday, Union returns to Schenectady with a series split with the 15th-ranked Nittany Lions. The Garnet Chargers will return to action when they get back to ECAC Hockey play on Friday, when they travel to begin the North Country swing with St. Lawrence at 6:00 p.m.
