SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - First-year
Karianne Engelbert netted her second career goal in Union College's women's hockey team's 4-2 loss to Penn State University on Friday night.
Â
Union (2-3) received goals from junior
Stephanie Bourque and Engelbert, both coming in the second period.
Â
The Garnet Chargers were able to get two shots off early in the first but the Nittany Lions struck first. A bounce off the boards from Taya MacDonald allowed Katelyn Roberts to retrieve the puck and push the puck past a Union defender. Roberts skated the puck into the offensive zone, and tucked the puck into the top left shelf.
Â
Union had three additional chances but could not score early until the second period.
Â
Nearly three minutes into the second, Klara Kenttala pushed the puck to
Maddie Leaney, who fired the puck up to Bourque. Bourque walked in, faked a shot before firing a low wrist shot from the top of the slot into the middle of the net, past Penn State's goalie, Katie DeSa.
Â
Approximately four minutes later, Penn State would respond taking the 2-1 lead. The rebound from a wrap-around attempt by Katelyn Roberts came out to the slot which Alyssa Machado retrieved and fired the puck into the net.
Â
Engelbert responded six minutes later. After completing her penalty, Engelbert stayed high near the offensive blue allowing
Emma Hebert to bank the puck off the boards up to Engelbert passing a Penn State defender. Engelbert skated the puck into the zone and curled tightly to the crease pushing the puck past DeSa.Â
Â
Penn State responded quickly to the goal. A minute later, Tessa Janecke skated around the offensive zone past Union's defenders and took a shot from the right slide of the slot into the right side of the net.
Â
Union recorded 10 total shots but could not take advantage of their additional chances in the second period.Â
Â
In the third period, Union had four shots on net and had a powerplay opportunity in the final minutes of the period, but could not capitalize.
Â
Penn State secured the 4-2 win with an empty net goal. A shot attempt on the empty net was deflected and the puck trickled to Janecke stationed at the blue line who skated in with the puck and scored the empty net goal.
Â
Senior
Sophie Matsoukas contributed solid play, registering 30 saves.
Â
The Garnet Chargers are back in action tomorrow for their Breast Cancer Awareness game against Penn State. Puck drop is set for 3 pm.
