SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Sophomore
Maddie Leaney netted two goals in the Union College's women's hockey team 5-3 loss to Penn State University on Saturday afternoon.
Union (2-4) received two goals from Leaney coming in the second and third period. First-year
Karianne Engelbert added a goal, and her second of the weekend in the third period.
The Nittany Lions quickly set the pace of the game scoring their first goal four minutes in. Alyssa Machado picked up a loose puck along the boards and fired it over to Lyndie Lobdell who passed a Union defender and fired a shot from the inside of the right circle into the left side of the net.
Penn State netted their second goal of the period eight minutes later. After receiving a pass from Katelyn Roberts, Tiffany Hill drop-passed the puck to Nicole Hall on the right side hashes near the boards. Hall skated past a Union defender and took a shot from the inside of the right circle past Union's goalkeeper into the left side of the net.
Penn State found the back of the net for the third time in the first period. Defender Leah Stecker fired a shot that deflected off of traffic in front of the net. Grace Outwater found the rebound and slid it across the crease to Maddy Christian
, who shot the puck into the right side of the net.
Union finished with 11 shots and three power play opportunities but did not capitalize on their chances in the first period.
In the second period, sophomore goaltender
Monja Wagner stepped in the net for senior goaltender
Sophie Matsoukas.
Leaney scored the lone goal of the period just under two and a half minutes into the game when Penn State failed to catch a pass leaving the loose puck in their defensive zone. Leaney scooped the loose puck on the left side, curled tightly to the crease, and deked Penn State's goalkeeper and put the puck into the right side of the net.
Union finished the second period with six shots and an additional powerplay opportunity but did not take advantage of any of their additional opportunities.
Leaney opened the scoring in the third period, just under two and half minutes again. Senior
Paige Greco passed the puck forward to Leaney on the right boards. Leaney, then, skated down middle ice into the right side of the offensive zone and ripped a shot from inside the right circle into the top right side of the net.
Penn State quickly got two goals back in the third, 15 seconds a part. 11:30 into the third period, after Tessa Janecke was tripped up by a Union player, the loose puck trickled to Kendall Butze who skated into the offensive zone and passed the puck to Machado who fired a shot from the slot into the left side of the net. The second goal came when Outwater used her skate during a scrum on the boards to pass the puck to Machado who skated into the offensive zone and fired a shot from the right dot into the left side of the net.
Engelbert would add Union's third goal of the night in the final minutes of the third period. First-year
Jill Willis passed the puck across the blue line to sophomore
Quinn Dunkle. Dunkle passed the puck to Engelbert who was stationed at the top of the circle. Engelbert walked in and fired a shot from inside the right circle into the left side of the net.
Union finished with 25 shots. Matsoukas finished with eight saves while Wagner recorded 21 saves on the evening.
Union is back in action next weekend when they travel to the University of New Hampshire for a two-game non-conference weekend. Puck drop is set for 6:00 pm on Friday and Saturday night.
