UTICA, N.Y. – The Union College field hockey team scored once in each of the first three periods as the Garnet Chargers won their third straight game with a 3-1 victory over Utica University in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
Three different players scored in the win for Union (9-4), with sophomores
Maddie Greco and
Rachel Ostiguy as well as first-year
Bobbi Serino all finding the net. Junior
Megan Dorsey and sophomore
Reese Fendelet picked up assists as well in the win.
Union's first tally came off a penalty corner that saw the visitors maintain possession and pressure inside the arc. After the team's first three shots were saved in a busy sequence, Serino managed to poke the ball over the goal line for her fifth goal of the season at the 9:22 mark.
The Garnet Chargers kept up the offensive pressure, putting two more shots on goal in the first period and peppering Utica goalie Ismiah ChinQuee with four more to start the second before Greco doubled the Union lead in the 25th minute. Dorsey sent a pass across the arc for Greco to redirect home her 12th goal in 13 games so far this season.
After a goal by Alyssa Pisano got Utica (2-10) back within one later in the second stanza, Ostiguy provided some insurance late in the third frame. Fendelet took the ball down the left side and got to the goal line, where she drew defenders before flicking the ball in front of the net to a wide-open Ostiguy, who beat ChinQuee for her third goal of the year.
Junior
Sophie Brady took care of the rest for Union, making four saves in the fourth quarter and eight for the game to pick up her seventh win of the season. The Garnet Chargers outshot the Pioneers by a 23-12 margin and nearly doubled up the home team in on-target attempts by a 17-9 margin.
Union will return to Liberty League play for the next two weekends, beginning with a Friday matchup at Vassar College beginning at 5 p.m.
