Field Hockey Drops 5-2 Contest to #12 Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – A four-goal second-half from #12 Wesleyan University allowed the Cardinals to defeat the Union College field hockey team by a 5-2 score in non-conference action on Wednesday evening at Hicks Field.

Sophomores Maddie Greco and Rachel Ostiguy scored for Union (6-4), which got one in the second period and one in the fourth. Georgia Adams scored twice to pace Wesleyan (7-2) to the victory.

The Cardinals opened the scoring 7:53 into the opening frame, with Sarah Porter getting past the defense before firing a ball just inside the post for her fourth goal of the year. Union limited Wesleyan to just two shots in the opening frame while putting one on the opposing net.

Union knotted the score less than a minute into the second period on Greco's 10th goal in the team's 10th game. Junior Megan Dorsey weaved through several Cardinals before passing forward to Greco, who one-timed a shot inside the near post to reach double figures for the second straight year. The visitors outshot the home team by a 3-2 margin in the second stanza to even the shots at four apiece at the half.

The Cardinals assumed control once again with a pair of goals in the third quarter, with Imana Ochieng and Adams scoring 2:10 apart to take a 3-1 lead into the fourth frame. Adams and Kenzie Mauro extended the Wesleyan lead to 5-1 before Ostiguy scored with 2:56 left on a pass from first-year Astoria Rix.

Wesleyan finished the game with a 16-11 advantage in shots and took 10 corners to Union's one. Junior Sophie Brady made five saves in the first 53:52 of the game before first-year Tess Parker stopped the only three on-target shots she faced over the final 6:08.

Union, whose four losses this year have all come to nationally ranked opposition, will face off with a third straight NFHCA ranked squad on Saturday when the Garnet Chargers host #18 University of Rochester at 3 p.m. in a Liberty League matchup at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
