GENEVA, N.Y. – The Union College football team was limited to 242 total yards and just 41 yards on the ground in a 27-0 loss at Liberty League frontrunner Hobart College on Saturday afternoon at Boswell Field at David J. Urick Stadium.
Junior
Patch Flanagan was the leader both through the air and on the ground for Union (2-5, 1-2 Liberty League), completing 22-of-36 passes for 201 yards while also running for 21 yards. Senior
Robbie Tolbert caught a team-best six passes for 72 yards, followed by junior
Gil Rivera with 54 yards on five receptions.
E.J. Taylor paced Hobart (7-1, 4-0 Liberty League) with 140 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, while Johnny Colombi completed 16-of-25 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown.
The Statesmen got the ball first and moved their way down the field in less than six minutes, capping a 10-play drive with a one-yard touchdown run from Taylor to take an early 7-0 lead.
After going three-and-out on its first offensive drive, Union got a 55-yard punt from sophomore
Hayden Hall and forced a quick Hobart punt to get the ball back at the 38-yard line. The Garnet Chargers used a pair of third-down conversions to get a goal-to-go situation, but the drive stalled and a field-goal attempt went wayward to keep the visitors off the scoreboard early in the second.
A fumble gave the Statesmen good field position midway through the second quarter and resulted in a 49-yard field goal from Tobias Wefering to bump the Hobart lead to 10-0 with 7:37 left in the second. The home team added another field goal in the final minute of the second stanza to take a 13-0 lead into halftime.
Following a scoreless third frame, Hobart scored the only two touchdowns of the fourth quarter to finish off the scoring.
Senior
James Gillespie led Union defensively with a team-best 12 tackles, followed by senior
Ethan VanderBrink and sophomore
Dwayne Hinds with 10 tackles each. Senior
Nate Sullivan added six tackles and his seventh career interception as well.
Union will return home next Saturday to host Ithaca College in another Liberty League matchup beginning at noon at Frank Bailey Field.
