Football Struggles Again in 24-0 Loss to Ithaca

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College football team struggled offensively for the second straight week, suffering a 24-0 loss to Ithaca College in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

Junior Patch Flanagan went 20-of-41 for 186 yards and junior Gil Rivera caught seven passes for a game-high 95 yards for Union (2-6, 1-3 Liberty League). Senior Cole DaSilva led the defensive effort with 15 tackles (eight solo), followed by sophomore Dwayne Hinds with 10 tackles. Sophomore punter Hayden Hall also had a good game, averaging 41.1 yards per punt on nine attempts.

Matthew Parker completed 22-of-29 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns to lead Ithaca (5-3, 4-1 Liberty League), with six of his passes finding Nicholas Lang for 83 yards and a score.

The Bombers started off the game well, returning the opening kickoff to the 47-yard line and needing only six plays to find the end zone. After a pair of first downs, Parker found Ben Marinaccio for a 25-yard touchdown strike to put the visitors up 7-0 less than three minutes into the game.

The teams traded punts for the next nine drives, with Union amassing only 41 yards over its first five drives. The Bombers then added to their lead late in the second, with Parker completing a 26-yard pass to Sam Kline and a 42-yard touchdown strike to Lang on back-to-back plays to find the end zone. The Bombers added a field goal later in the frame to take a 17-0 lead into halftime.

The Union defense limited Ithaca to only one touchdown in the second half, but the offense could get nothing going. First-year John Droggitis short-circuited Ithaca's first drive of the second half with a red-zone interception, and the Bombers were limited to 11 yards on their next two times with the ball. Ithaca took advantage of a short field to score their final touchdown with under 10 minutes remaining

Union will look to shake off the loss next Saturday, when the team hosts the University of Rochester for its final home game of the season beginning at noon at Frank Bailey Field.
