SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's hockey team suffered their first ECAC Hockey loss this season, falling 4-1 to Clarkson University on Saturday evening at Messa Rink.
Union (7-3-1, 2-1-0 ECACH) and Clarkson (8-3-1, 2-0-0 ECACH) combined to go 0-7 on the powerplay. Union generated 12 shots across five power-play opportunities and limited Clarkson to one shot on two chances.
The Golden Knights took a 1-0 lead only three minutes into the contest. A shot by Tate Taylor from the point went off the skate of Ayrton Martino in front and Martino tapped the rebound past junior
Kyle Chauvette. Union knotted the game up 76 seconds later off of a goal by sophomore
DJ Hart. Senior
Josh Nixon chipped the puck out of a corner battle to Hart at the blue line and the defender sent a one-timer from the right circle past Ethan Langenegger. Clarkson made it a one-goal game at 9:34 off a goal by Luka Sukovic.
Clarkson made it a two-goal game early in the second period. Ryan Bottrill was called for tripping to put Union on their second powerplay of the night. With only four seconds remaining, Tristan Sarsland fired a wrister past Chauvette for the short-handed tally.
Union put 17 shots on goal in the third period, but Langenegger made all 17 stops. Union had several great chances on a 5-on-3 power-play opportunity with seven shots on net, but the Clarkson defense and several saves by Langenegger shut down the Union offense. After Chauvette went to the bench in favor of the extra attacker, the Golden Knights added an empty net goal to seal the game.
Chauvette made 14 saves in the 55:03 of game time. Langenegger stopped 28 shots for the win.
Union will take some time off before returning to the ice for a two-game non-conference series against Niagara University. Game one is scheduled for Friday, November 29 at 6:00 p.m. at Dwyer Arena.
