Blomquist Notches First Goal in 4-3 Loss to #6 Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Union College women's hockey team fell short 4-3 to #6 Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Class of 1965 Arena.

Union (5-7) received goals from sophomore Mikayla Blomquist, first-year Karianne Engelbert, and senior Maren Friday. Sophomore Maddie Leaney picked up two assists while seniors Ashley Adams and Paige Greco and juniors Mallory Mauracher and Stephanie Bourque each recorded an assist.

Union came out with energy in the first period registering four shots on net in the first three minutes of action to Colgate's one. But Colgate opened the scoring. A shot from the point by fifth year Kristyna Kaltounkova pinballed off of Union's players and found its way into the back of the net.

However, Union would tie the game 2:47 later. After Mauracher received a pass from Leaney, Mauracher and Blomquist found themselves on a two on one. Mauracher was able to fire the puck over to Blomquist, who shot the puck into the right bottom corner of the net. The goal marked Blomquist's first goal of her collegiate career. 

In the next ten minutes of action, Union recorded four additional shots on net, but Colgate found the back of the net for a second time with a powerplay goal 3:41 to go in the first. 

Avery Pickering fired a pass across to Madeline Palumbo, who then threaded a diagonal pass to Kaia Malachino, positioned at the back door, and shot the puck into the net.

In the second period, despite being outshot 12 to nine, Union scored two additional goals taking a lead for the first time in the game, 3-2.

Union's first goal of the period came ten minutes into action when a puck was flipped forward to Leaney. Leaney and Engelbert found themselves on a two on one which Leaney fired the puck across to Engelbert who backhanded the puck into the right corner of the net.

Friday netted her goal with just 1:41 left in the second period. Adams passed the puck to Bourque who was stationed at the blue line. Bourque fired the puck across to Friday who shot the puck into traffic and found its way into the right side of the net.

In the third period, Colgate tied the game 2:25 in. Neena Brick located on the right goal line passed to Alexis Petford who fired the puck into the net from the bottom left side of the slot.

Colgate scored the game winning goal with 11:25 to go in the third period. After a scrum, Kaltounkova retrieved the puck and fired it into the right side of the net. 

Union registered four more shots on goal over the next 11 minutes of play and pulled senior goaltender Sophie Matsoukas in the final moments for an extra attacker, but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Matsoukas finished with 33 saves on the evening.

Women's Hockey is back in action next Friday and Saturday as they travel to Clarkson University and St. Lawrence University for a conference weekend series. Puck drop is set for 6:00 pm on Friday night versus Clarkson and 3:00 pm on Saturday against St. Lawrence University.
