Union Women's Hockey Falls 3-2 in OT to #6 Clarkson

POTSDAM, NY - The Union women's hockey team fell 3-2 in overtime to #6 Clarkson on Friday night at Cheel Arena.

The goals came from senior Maddie Suitor and first-year Karianne Engelbert. First-year Giavanna Mancy tallied her first collegiate point with an assist while first-year Klara Kenttälä, junior Stephanie Bourque, and senior Paige Greco each recorded an assist.

The Golden Knights put the offensive pressure on in the first registering nine shots to Union's three but the Garnet Chargers played a strong defensive game to keep the game scoreless through the first 20 minutes of action.

39 seconds into the second period, Clarkson opened the scoring. After receiving a pass from Sena Catterall at the top of the blue line, Sidney Fess skated the puck to the bottom of the goal line. Fess and fired a pass to Anne Cherkowski located in the middle of the left circle and shot the puck into the left side of the net.

Union answered nine minutes later. After a wrap-around attempt by Bourque and second attempt on the puck by Kenttälä, the puck trickled to the left side of the net to Suitor to jam home.

Clarkson added five shots on goal to Union's one in the remainder of the second period but neither team registered additional goals.

In the third period, the Golden Knights added their second goal of the night five minutes in. After receiving a pass from Rhea Hicks, Sena Catterall skated the puck forward and fired a shot from the top of the left circle into the right side of the net.

Union answered nearly six minutes later, tying the game at two. A great effort by Mancy to keep the puck into the offensive zone, the blue liner was able to get the puck to Greco who fired a shot from the center of the left circle. The rebound popped out to the goal line to Engelbert to fire it home.

The Garnet Chargers matched the Golden Knight's offensive effort in the third period as both teams tallied eight shots on net but no teams scored an additional goal, sending the game into overtime.

Clarkson scored the game winning goal with a 1:51 into the extra period. After a shot attempt by Anne Cherkowski was blocked by a Union player, the puck came out to the blue line in which Nicole Gosling was able to pick up and fire a shot into the right side of the net.

Senior goaltender Sophie Matsoukas delivered a solid performance making 26 critical saves for the Garnet Chargers.

Women's Hockey is back in action tomorrow as they face #8 St. Lawrence for a conference match-up. Puck drop is set for 3:00 pm.
