Men's Hockey Completes Weekend Sweep at Niagara

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – Senior Josh Nixon and junior Brandon Buhr each scored twice for the Union College men's hockey team in a 5-3 win over Niagara University on Saturday night at Dwyer Arena.

With last night's 4-2-win, Union (9-3-1, 3-1-0 ECACH) sweeps the weekend over Niagara (7-7-3, 6-3-2 AHA), marking the first road sweep of the season for the Garnet Chargers. The last time Union won both games on the road was this past January, when the team defeated Dartmouth 5-1 on Jan. 19 and Harvard in a 5-4 overtime thriller on Jan. 20.

In addition to Nixon and Buhr, junior Colby MacArthur also recorded a multi-point game with a goal and an assist.

The Garnet Chargers struck 4:10 into the opening frame to take a 1-0 lead. The senior fired a wrister from the right circle to beat Pierce Charleson for his fourth goal of the season. Niagara responded with a power-play goal from Jay Ahearn to knot the game at one.

Nixon added a power-play goal in the second period to give Union a 2-1 lead at 7:06. MacArthur chipped the puck to junior Parker Lindauer behind the net. Lindauer sent a quick pass to Nixon in the slot and the senior fired a shot past Charleson's glove for his second goal of the game. Niagara tied up again at 14:18 with a goal from Brett Roloson. MacArthur broke the tie 2:30 later. Senior Caden Villegas sent a no-look behind the back pass from behind the net to MacArthur at the bottom of the right circle and the junior found the back of the net for the 3-2 lead. The Purple Knights had an excellent scoring chance shortly after MacArthur's goal, but junior Kyle Chauvette made a big save with 1:58 to play in the period to keep Union in the lead.

Union rattled off two goals in a row in the third period courtesy of Buhr. The junior initially took a shot from the slot that bounced off of Charleson's pads and back into play. Junior Nate Hanley corralled the rebound and chipped it back to Buhr who struck at 7:58 of the third. Buhr scored again at 16:48 to make it a three-goal game. Hanley took a shot that went high off the glove of Charleson and behind the net. Junior John Prokop collected the puck in front of the Niagara bench and sent it up the wall to Buhr who cashed in from high in the slot. Niagara scored at 17:26 with a goal from Noah Hackett. The Purple Eagles pulled Charleson in favor of the extra attacker, but they could not convert.

Chauvette made 19 saves for his ninth win of the season. Charleson stopped 30 shots, including 12 in the second period, in the loss.

Union returns to ECAC Hockey action on Friday with a trip to Princeton University. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. at Hobey Baker Rink.
