HAMDEN, Conn. – The Union College men's hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to #18 Quinnipiac on Saturday evening at M&T Bank Arena.

The opening period was a back-and-forth battle between the two programs. Union was able to shut down to penalty kill opportunities and finished the period with a 14-9 advantage in shots.
Union opened the second period with a goal only 15 seconds into the middle stanza. Hanley won the faceoff back to junior
John Prokop who chipped the puck into the offensive zone. Junior
Brandon Buhr corralled the puck at the end wall and passed it behind the net to Hanley. The center sent a behind the back shot that ricocheted off a Quinnipiac defender's skate and into the net. Braden Place scored the equalizer at 4:23 of the second period to tie the game at one. A holding call against senior
Josh Nixon put the Bobcats on the powerplay and they only needed six seconds before Travis Treloar found the back of the net for the eventual game-winning goal. The Bobcats made it a two-goal game at 16:35, but Ryan Smith was assessed a five-minute major and game misconduct for butt-ending to give Union a five-minute powerplay.
With 1:35 remaining on the powerplay in the third period, Union fired two shots on goal, but both were saved by Dylan Silverstein. Andon Cerbone committed a cross-checking penalty at 17:41 of the third and Union pulled junior
Kyle Chauvette in favor of the extra attacker. Union had three shots blocked on the 6-on-4 opportunity, but could not break through.
Chauvette made 19 saves in the loss. Silverstein stopped 34 shots including 14 in the first period.
Union closes out the 2024 portion of the schedule next weekend with a two-game series against the University of Vermont. Friday's puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Messa Rink.
