SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Union women's hockey team cruised past Brown, 4-1, Saturday afternoon at Messa Rink.
Junior Amanda Quan opened the scoring with her first goal of the season, while first-year Klara Kenttälä, junior Stephanie Bourque, and sophomore Maddie Leaney also registered goals in the win. Senior captain Maren Friday assisted twice, while seniors Maya Jones, Maddie Suitor, Ashley Adams, and sophomore Kendal Davidson all tallied one assist.
Union came out outshooting the Bears 8 to 4 in the first half of the first period including a penalty shot opportunity.Â
Quan lit the lamp 11 minutes into the first period. Jones fired a shot on goal from the left side of the boards, the rebound popped out to Quan at the top of the crease, and she fired it home.Â
Over the next ten minutes of play, Union registered three shots on goal to Brown's one, including a power-play opportunity, but were unable to capitalize on any additional chances in the first period.
In the first eight minutes of play of the second period, the Garnet Chargers outshot Brown 4-3, but two penalties against Union gave Brown the opportunity to capitalize, scoring their lone goal of the game during a 5-on-3 power play.
Ella Muralt sent a pass from the top of the right circle to Margot Norehad, who was positioned at the bottom of the left circle. Norehad fired the puck across to Monique Lyons, and Lyons shot the puck into the right side of the net.
However, the Garnet Chargers rebounded and netted three goals in seven minutes.Â
Kenttälä scored her second goal of the season just three minutes after Brown's tally. Adams chipped the puck to Suitor, who advanced on a 2-on-1 with Kenttälä. Suitor slid the puck across to Kenttälä, positioned in the slot, and Kenttälä buried it into the left side of the net.
Bourque netted her goal just 2:12 after Kenttälä, capitalizing on a power play. After receiving a pass from Davidson, Friday fired the puck across to Bourque, who skated from the left side to the top of the slot. Bourque then shot the puck through traffic and found the top left corner of the net.
Leaney found the back of the net with 1:29 remaining in the middle frame. After receiving the puck from Friday, Engelbert fired the puck up to Leaney who skated in on the right side and sent the puck into the left side of the net.
In the third period, Brown outshot Union, 12 to three, but the Garnet Chargers played a strong defensive game to keep the Bears at bay. Union killed off two penalties and blocked two shots in the effort. Senior goaltender Sophie Matsoukas stopped 30 shots in the win.
Women's hockey wraps up the first half of the season with a 8-11-1 record. Union returns to action and continues ECAC play on Friday, January 3, and Saturday, January 4, when they take on #7/#9 Quinnipiac and Princeton. Puck drop is set for 6:00 pm on Friday night and 3:00 pm on Saturday afternoon.
