SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's hockey team dropped a 6-1 decision to #12/13 Cornell University on Saturday night at Messa Rink.
Union (13-13-2, 7-7-2) outshot Cornell (15-4-4, 10-4-2) 24-23 in the loss. The Garnet Chargers currently sit in fifth with 25 points in the league standings with three weeks remaining in the regular season.
Junior
Cullen Ferguson was the lone goal scorer for Union. Sophomore
Nate Hanley and senior
Chaz Smedsrud both registered assists.
The Big Red found the back of the net first with a goal from Jonathan Castagna. A turnover in the defensive end of the ice saw Castagna fire a shot past sophomore
Kyle Chauvette's glove. Castagna added a second goal in the opening frame to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. The Union penalty kill successfully killed off a five-minute major penalty that carried over into the second period.
Cornell added two more goals in the second period. Gabriel Seger found the back of the net on the powerplay and Sullivan Mack scored only 47 seconds later. Ferguson scored his third goal of the season in the middle frame on the powerplay. Sophomore
Nate Hanley chipped the puck out of the right-wing circle and Ferguson sent a one-timer from the point for the score.
Union peppered Ian Shane with 14 shots in the final frame. The Big Red scored two more in the third period, finding the back of the net twice in 21 seconds. Ondrej Psenicka scored an empty-netter and Winter Wallace closed out the scoring.
Chauvette made 17 saves while Shane stopped 23 shots.
Union is on the road next weekend beginning with a tilt at nationally-ranked Quinnipiac University on Friday night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at M&T Bank Arena.
