Box Score SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - First-Year
Maddie Leaney scored her 11th goal of her rookie season midway through the first period of Union's Friday night contest with #12 Princeton, but five unanswered goals from the Tigers would lead them to the 5-1 victory at Messa Rink.
After an opening 10-plus minutes of play that saw just a combined five shots on goal, Union broke the scoreless tie just past the halfway point of the first period.
A Princeton chipped puck that deflected off a linesman in the neutral zone put possession up for grabs. Union first-year forward
Maddie Leaney scooped up the loose puck on her backhand at the redline and turned on the jets as she turned back towards Princeton's goal and across their defending blue line, going straight for the net where she flipped a shot past freshman goalie Uma Corniea right before sliding into her to give Union a 1-0 lead.
Leaney's 11th of the season tied sophomore
Riley Walsh for the team-lead. Sophomore
Stephanie Bourque picked up her eighth assist of the season on Leaney's netfinder, registering her 12th point of the campaign to match the number she put up in her first year.
Princeton turned up the physicality and pressure now facing the game's first deficit, and turned it into three goals in a stretch of 1:17 to grab a hold of the momentum. Annie Kuehl's sixth of the season tied the game with 4:04 remaining in the period before Sarah Fillier's 21st and 22nd of the campaign 34 seconds apart gave the Tigers a two-goal lead heading into the first intermission.
Fillier would complete the hat trick just about halfway through the middle frame to extend Princeton's lead to three, before Gabby Kim's second of the season with less than four minutes remaining provided the final score.
Kim's goal came on Princeton's fifth power play of the night, after Union successfully killed off Princeton's first four power plays. The Tigers would be unable to score on their final one to go 1-for-6 on the evening while Union went 0-for-2.
Princeton outshout Union 27-13 in the contest, and won the battle of the faceoff dot, 30-20.
Union wraps up the regular season Saturday afternoon when they host #9 Quinnipiac at 3:00 p.m. at Messa Rink. The Garnet Chargers will recognize the five members of their senior class-
