Union's Season Ends in the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals

HANOVER, N.H. – The Union College men's hockey team saw their season end with a 4-2 loss to Dartmouth College in the second game of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals on Saturday night at Thompson Arena.

Union finishes the season with a 16-18-3 record and a 9-10-3 record in ECAC Hockey play.

Junior Caden Villegas was the lone goal scorer for the Garnet Chargers.

Both teams had early scoring chances, but Union scored first. After a review of a minor penalty that turned into a five-minute major, Union capitalized on the powerplay to give the Garnet Chargers a 1-0 lead. Junior Cullen Ferguson took the initial shot that was deflected by Villegas for his 11th goal of the season. Dartmouth tied it up at 15:39 of the period. Braiden Dorfman took a quick shot from the slot as he was crashing the net for the score.

Tied at one each going into the second period, the Garnet Chargers took a 2-1 lead with Villegas' second goal of the night. The junior fired a shot from the doorstep for his 12th goal of the season. The lead didn't last long as Dartmouth's Matt Fusco took a shot from the right point to tie the game at two apiece less than six minutes later.

Union opened the third by killing the rest of a penalty. The Garnet Chargers generated several chances in the third, but Dartmouth scored the go-ahead goal at 14:04 from Luke Haymes. Union pulled sophomore Kyle Chauvette in favor of the extra attacker after a penalty on Dartmouth late in the frame gave Union an opportunity for a 6-on-4. Dartmouth killed off the penalty, but scored the empty-netter with 39 seconds to go.

Chauvette made 21 saves in the loss, including 10 in the final period, to finish the season with a 15-16-3 record. Cooper Black stopped 24 shots for the win.

Saturday's game marks the final contest for Union's six seniors, Chaz Smedsrud, Tyler Watkins, Ville Immonen, Liam Robertson, Nathan Kelly, and Ben Tupker.
